Civil Supplies Department
functions under the supervision of the Home Secretary who
is also Secretary, Food and Supplies. The Deputy Commissioner,
who is also the Director, Food and Supplies, administers the
department and day-to-day functioning is carried out by
the Joint Director Food and Supplies assisted by a District
Food and Supplies Officer.
This department is mainly concerned with the Public Distribution
System. The Public Distribution System covers all of India
and is intended to ensure that a minimum quantity of essential
commodities such as wheat, rice, sugar and kerosene oil
are available to people at reasonable rates.
