Activities of Medicinal Plants Board Union Territory,
Chandigarh
The Medicinal Plants Board, Union Territory Chandigarh was
wet up in 2001-02 in the Department of Forests, Chandigarh
Administration. The Board is responsible for coordination of
all matters related to medicinal plans which include
promotion of in-situ conservation, ex-site cultivation,
research and development, education and awareness etc. for
overall development of this sector. With the help of
financial assistance from National Medicinal Plants Board,
the Board has created a Herbal Garden over 35 acres of land
and a Nucleus Centre near Sarangpur. Herbal Garden is the
part of Botanical Garden, Chandigarh. It has more than 70
species of medicinal trees and 65 species of medicinal
herbs. A Nursery has also been established I this garden.
The saplings of Medicinal Plants are being distributed free
of cost to the individuals, educational institution,
Government and Non-Government organizations and farmers.
Medicinal Plants Board in Collaboration with schools and
colleges has established Herbal Gardens in 20 schools and 5
colleges of Chandigarh, to create awareness and education
among students and teachers about our rich medicinal plants
heritage. Board has also distributed awareness material in
the form of tin plates, pamphlets and booklets consisting
information on medicinal plants. The students are visiting
garden on regular basis to acquaint themselves with various
types of medicinal plants available there. Medicinal Plants
Board’s Nucleus Centre located in the Herbal Garden has a
library, a Conference Hall and Nature Interpretation Centre.
Training on medicinal plants is being imparted there to all
sections of the society. The Board participated in various
Vanaushdhi Melas in Delhi, Dehradun and Chandigarh where
herbal saplings were given to the public besides creating
awareness.
